Position Title: Facilities Maintenance and Cleaning Associate

Reports To: Pastor/Building and Grounds Session Member

Collaborates With: Office Administrator/Janitor

Employment Type: Part-Time, approximately 21 hours a week, 5 days, occasional evening/weekend work may be required

 Location: Ogden Memorial Presbyterian Church, Chatham, NJ

Position Summary

The Facilities Maintenance and Cleaning Associate is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-functioning environment for worship, preschool/Montessori programs, and community activities. This hands-on role combines daily cleaning, light maintenance, seasonal outdoor care, contractor coordination, and basic HVAC oversight among other responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Interior Cleaning & Housekeeping (as needed in coordination with Janitor)

  • Vacuum the narthex and church entrance carpets daily

  • Vacuum all church sanctuary carpets weekly

  • Vacuum library carpet weekly

  • Vacuum/sweep parlor floor as needed

  • Dust windows and windowsills throughout the church

  • Daily dust-mop gymnasium floor

  • Dust and wipe radiator covers in the gymnasium as needed

  • Clean the small kitchen

  • Maintain adequate stock of hand towels, toilet paper, and soap in all restrooms

  • Sort recyclables and place at curb on designated pickup days

Outdoor & Grounds Maintenance

  • Clear leaves and debris from Elmwood (red) entrance doors daily, as needed

  • Perform weekly inspection and cleaning of the dumpster area (inside and behind chain-link fencing)

  • Water outdoor plants during summer months as required

  • Replace dead or diseased plants

  • Adjust four outdoor light timers twice annually for Daylight Savings Time changes

  • Salt & shovel on occasion/as needed (in addition to what contracted snow removal company does)

  Daily Building Security & Systems Checks

  • Conduct daily walk-through of grounds upon arrival and before departure to ensure all doors are securely locked

  • Respond promptly to maintenance and setup requests from church, Ogden Junior Preschool, Montessori staff and other building users (occasional additional requests)

  • Check thermostat operation and settings weekly

  • Change light bulbs throughout classrooms and building as needed

Contractor & Vendor Coordination

  • Source, obtain a minimum of two quotes (when possible), and oversee completion of all contractor projects on behalf of the church

  • Identify required supplies, select appropriate vendors, and place orders

  • Schedule bi-annual boiler maintenance with HVAC contractor

  • Schedule bi-annual sewer line clean-out with plumber (during periods when Montessori is not in session)

  • Coordinate with vendors for issues as they arise and work for quick resolution (i.e. plumber, electrician, snow removal company, etc.)

  • Coordinate all annual inspections (in coordination with Office Administrator)

  • Maintain list of all current vendors/contractors, and files on agreements with them

HVAC Support

  • Drain 5 gallons of water from boiler weekly during winter operation

Miscellaneous

·         Coordinate with Janitor and Office Administrator to order supplies as needed

·         Coordinate with Office Administrator for monthly fire drills

·         Complete other projects as requested (such as moving decorations for church, setting up tables, etc.)

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Proven experience in cleaning, facilities maintenance, or janitorial work

  • Basic knowledge of building systems (lighting, thermostats, timers, boilers)

  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks (climbing ladders, kneeling, bending, etc.)

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Excellent communication skills and a service-oriented attitude

  • Comfort working in a religious environment and interacting with staff, preschool families, and congregation members

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred

  • Ability to pass background check required (working around children)

 Schedule

Occasionally flexible schedule built around building occupancy;  week day daily presence required for opening/closing security checks and cleaning tasks. Some weekend or evening hours may occasionally be needed for special events or contractor scheduling.

Pay Range: $18-20/hr
